Matrix
DragonWriter can send you notifications as direct messages on Matrix, an open chat network. Linking your Matrix account connects it to your DragonWriter account so our bot can DM you the notifications you choose, and โ if the site has a Matrix space โ invites you to it. Unlike Discord there are no chat commands; Matrix is only used to notify you.
The Matrix section only appears once an admin has set the feature up, so if you do not see it, it is not yet available on your site.
Linking your account
You confirm the link with a one-time code the bot sends you, which proves the Matrix account is yours.
- Open your account settings and, on the General tab, find the Matrix section.
- Enter your Matrix ID โ it looks like
@you:matrix.orgโ and select Connect Matrix. - The bot opens a direct message with you and sends a verification code. Accept the bot's invite in your Matrix client (for example Element) so you can see the message.
- Copy the code, paste it into the Verification code box back on the settings page, and select Verify and connect. The code expires after fifteen minutes; if it lapses, just start again.
Each Matrix account can be linked to only one DragonWriter account. If you change your mind mid-way, select Cancel to drop the pending code.
Choosing what gets sent
Once you are linked, a Matrix column appears in the table on the Notifications tab of your settings, next to In-app, Email and (where available) Push. Tick any notification type there to also receive it as a Matrix DM from the bot. Matrix DMs are always sent immediately โ the email digest schedule does not apply to them โ and every type starts switched off, so you only get what you opt into. See engagement and notifications for what each notification type means.
Joining the space
If the site has a Matrix space set up, connecting your account also sends you an invite to it. Accept the invite in your Matrix client to join the community there.
Unlinking your account
In the same Matrix section, select Disconnect Matrix. The bot stops sending you notifications, the link is cleared from your account, and if you were invited to the space you are removed from it. You can reconnect later at any time. Deleting your DragonWriter account unlinks you the same way.
If the code does not arrive
- Make sure you accepted the bot's invite โ an unaccepted invite can hide the message in some clients.
- Check the Matrix ID you entered is exactly right, including the server part after the colon.
- If more than fifteen minutes have passed, the code has expired โ select Connect Matrix again for a fresh one.
What an admin configures
Whether Matrix is available at all, which room the site's announcements are posted to, and whether there is a space to invite you into are all set up by an admin. The public announcements (new stories, forum threads, challenges and group-sprint results) are posted by the same bot; they are separate from your personal DM notifications.
