Writing tools

The writing tools page at /tools is a small collection of sparks for when you are stuck. Everything runs right in your browser, and nothing is kept unless you star it.

Name generator

Pick a style โ€” Fantasy, Sci-fi, Modern, Place names or Titles and epithets โ€” and select Generate for a batch of names. Star any you like to save it to your favourites.

Story prompt

Select New prompt for a one-line spark about your protagonist or antagonist.

Story dice

Roll for a prompt to build a scene around. There are two modes:

  • Prompt dice โ€” a written prompt.
  • Picture dice โ€” a set of picture symbols to weave together.

Select Roll for a new one, and Save roll to keep it.

Magic 8 ball

Type a yes/no question โ€” it's required, so Ask stays greyed out until you write one โ€” and select Ask for an answer, when you just need something to nudge a decision. Once the ball settles, a star lets you save that question and its answer to your favourites.

Saved favourites

Anything you star is kept in the Saved favourites list at the bottom of the page, so it survives between visits. Each saved name shows its style, and a saved 8-ball answer shows the question you asked. Use the bin icon on any entry to remove it. Nothing on this page is saved automatically โ€” only what you choose to star.

You don't have to come back to this page to see your favourites. A โญ Favourites button opens the same list in a pop-up wherever you're working:

  • in the scene editor, in the left panel next to the โญ Note button;
  • in the note editor, in the left panel โ€” alongside Overview (back to your notes) and Story (back to the last scene you were editing);
  • on the notes, frontmatter and endmatter screens, beside the heading.

That pop-up is read-only โ€” to add or remove favourites, come back to this page.

When a name, prompt or roll gives you something worth using, take it into the scene editor and start writing.
